10 WARNING SIGNS OF ALZHEIMER'S:

Memory loss that disrupts daily life - One of the most common signs of Alzheimer's is memory loss, especially forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events; asking for the same information over and over; relying on memory aides (e.g., reminder notes or electronic devices) or family members for things they used to handle on their own. What's typical? Sometimes forgetting names or appointments, but remembering them later.
Challenges in planning or solving problems - Some people may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. They may have trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills. They may have difficulty concentrating and take much longer to do things than they did before. What's typical? Making occasional errors when balancing a checkbook.
Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure - People with Alzheimer's often find it hard to complete daily tasks. Sometimes, people may have trouble driving to a familiar location, managing a budget at work or remembering the rules of a favorite game. What's typical? Occasionally needing help to use the settings on a microwave or to record a television show.
Confusion with time or place - People with Alzheimer's can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time. They may have trouble understanding something if it is not happening immediately. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there. What's typical? Getting confused about the day of the week but figuring it out later.
Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships - For some people, having vision problems is a sign of Alzheimer's. They may have difficulty reading, judging distance and determining color or contrast. In terms of perception, they may pass a mirror and think someone else is in the room. They may not realize they are the person in the mirror. What's typical? Vision changes related to cataracts
New problems with words in speaking or writing - People with Alzheimer's may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They may struggle with vocabulary, have problems finding the right word or call things by the wrong name (e.g., calling a "watch" a "hand-clock"). What's typical? Sometimes having trouble finding the right word
Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps - A person with Alzheimer's disease may put things in unusual places. They may lose things and be unable to go back over their steps to find them again. Sometimes, they may accuse others of stealing. This may occur more frequently over time. What's typical? Misplacing things from time to time, such as a pair of glasses or the remote control
Decreased or poor judgment - People with Alzheimer's may experience changes in judgment or decision-making. For example, they may use poor judgment when dealing with money, giving large amounts to telemarketers. They may pay less attention to grooming or keeping themselves clean. What's typical? Making a bad decision once in a while.
Withdrawal from work or social activities - A person with Alzheimer's may start to remove themselves from hobbies, social activities, work projects or sports. They may have trouble keeping up with a favorite sports team or remembering how to complete a favorite hobby. They may also avoid being social because of the changes they have experienced. What's typical? Sometimes feeling weary of work, family and social obligations
Changes in mood and personality - The mood and personalities of people with Alzheimer's can change. They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. They may be easily upset at home, at work, with friends or in places where they are out of their comfort zone. What's typical? Developing very specific ways of doing things and becoming irritable when a routine is disrupted

During the month of May the class has been enjoying the class by Pastor Greg. We
studied the Resurrection Story as told by each of the four Gospels.

It's good to welcome back Pat from the southland. I believe all are now back in
the fold.

We continue to think of Vi's son-in-law in our prayers as he continues to suffer
with cancer.

We very much miss Jane B. She's such a kind, smiling addition to the class and
we pray she'll soon be feeling much better.

The following article from Kay and Woody S will make all of us long to go with
them next year.

"Consider the following package: golf, live shows, picnics by the lake, dinners,dances, Bible study, choir - two praise team practices, chorus participation (45 members), parties by streets, House Blest mission project weekly. The previous events are constant from December to April. There is no end to the activities one can choose to be involved with in our park. Our church in Haines City is joining with the U.M. Church in Davenport. The new name is New Horizon. We have two new pastors: Sarah Miller and Pam Childer. A high point is the church is growing. At our Christmas Cantata I got to sing in a choir with eight tenors (what a joy!). Kay & I meet Ed Downey and wife, Wanda, for lunch once a week. He leads our Bible Class. They are special people and Ed has a great sense of humor. Our park church is now incorporated under the New Horizon church. It is called The Lord's Church at Lake Henry. This church is alive and well. God has caused this church to be a blessing to our community. It cares for and nurtures the entire park community as well as giving to mission projects outside the park community.The past Easter sunrise service was attended by 140 folks. Above and beyond the above - the new relationships, excursions, SUNSHINE, and visits from family add to the joy we have down south."

Our May class meeting was moved from May 17 to May 24 so that the ladies could attend
the Sue Duffield service. Twenty-two people attended the class meeting. Devotions were led by Marian B and refreshments were served by Wilma C and Ted and Louise D. As always, the
fellowship was special. Special prayers were prayed for Fred B and Ruth Ann H.

The June class meeting will be a covered dish picnic on Thursday, June 23rd at Blue Spruce Park at 6:00 p.m.

Since my trip to Haiti the needs of the Haitian people weigh on my mind and heart daily. I
met a young woman named Megan on our last trip, and in an instant knew my future mission
was to support her mission in any way that I could. She has recently acquired 2 acres of land
in Gressier Haiti, and she plans to build a school. They plan to start building without full funds
to finish the building with the prayer that God will provide. I have never met anyone like Megan her entire mission and daily life rely completely in the faith that God will provide. I plan to hold several after church luncheon fundraisers to help financially support the building of this Haitian school.

Please join us Sunday June 12 at 11:00 a.m. for a pasta dinner that includes tomato and alfredo sauces, homemade meatballs, salad and deserts.

MISSION COMMITTEE REPORT

The Church Council has voted to have Trinity join with eleven other churches in the county to
participate in the Interfaith Hospitality Network program. This is a program to assist temporarily homeless people find a home and to house and give them meals until that goal is accomplished. Network "guests" would stay in our church from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. for one week about once every three months. Each morning guests are taken to a day center where they work with the Network director to seek housing, employment, and other resources to help them regain their independence. It is a program to keep families from being separated during this time of looking for another home. Thank you to all who have willingly volunteered to help with this endeavor. If you did not fill out a volunteer sheet and would like to help there are still forms at both entrances to the sanctuary.

Thanks to all the talented people who contributed hand-made items for the Relay for Life "talent
basket." The basket will be raffled off at the Relay for Life weekend and proceeds of the raffle will benefit the American Cancer Society. Thanks again for the beautiful hand-made items.

HELP WANTED JULY HAITI TRIP

Hilary and I have the privilege of traveling to Haiti once more to be at the Vine Church
Dedication Service on July 10th. It promises to be a glorious event. When we were there
in February Associate Pastor Daniel Telfort, who leads the music, told us he had been
rehearsing the “Hallelujah Chorus” with the choir. It won’t be in English but I can’t wait to
hear it!! Thank you for your prayers, gifts of material and cash for this trip. We are
taking some supplies in with us. I still have room for some of the following: embroidery
floss, thread, iron supplements, vitamin B supplements, flip flops. THANKS!

KNO-Remix: Wednesday's 6:30-8:00pm. This is our group designed especially for students in grades 6-8. Each week those who want to sing will meet right at 6:30 with Miss Patti and Miss Cindy. Then at 6:45 everyone will enjoy a game, followed by the lesson and a snack until 8:00. This fall we begin our LIVE program with a 4 week series on "the full story of God". Wonder how we'll do that in only 4 weeks?? Come and see!

> JOLT: Sunday's 6:30-8:00pm. This group is open to all students in grades 9-12 and will once again be meeting at the church. Our format will be small group study, where we meet for fellowship and to discuss a book or bible passage we've studied over the week. This fall we'll be studying Crazy Love by Francis Chan where we openly wonder if we're really getting what it means to follow Jesus. Each student will have a book and read one chapter per week to prepare for discussions. RSVP if you plan to participate so we have a book for you!!

> Rock the Block, September 19th: Invite a friend and come to Graystone Presbyterian Church parking lot from 3-7pm. Open to all 6-12 graders. This is a multi-church event you won't want to miss!!

The goal of this six-week study is to help us see the Second Coming of Christ not as a source of confusion and fear but as a source of hope. We will look at the signs and timing of Christ's return; the four major events of the end times; and how to live in light of the hope, expectation, and anticipation of Christ's return. Join us!! 2010 Spiritual Formation Retreat
Friday - Sunday, Nov 5-7, 2010
Camp Allegheny
We have the minimum needed for the retreat to happen; we have some time if anyone else is interested in attending. The retreat theme is "Draw Me Closer to You Lord." We will be using a small booklet entitled "Intimacy with the Father" by Chuck Swindoll. The booklet looks at intimacy, silence, solitude, and surrender and how those spiritual disciplines can help us grow closer to God. Dear Friends,

I am writing to you to tell you about an amazing opportunity that I have for next year. I have been accepted into the Certificate Program at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary called “World Christian Discipleship.” WCD is a 9-month experience in spiritual and vocational formation for young adults.

WCD is designed for people like me who are interested in discerning and preparing for Christian vocation, regardless of what kind of occupation God is calling me into. We are seeking to “stand at the crossroads and look and ask for the ancient paths; ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and find rest for our souls” (Jer. 6:16). The program is nontraditional, so we will live a simple life, in community with others, and serve a Pittsburgh neighborhood and church. On Thursday nights we will gather for a meal, prayer and teaching. We will also be committed to live according to a rule of life, including weekly Sabbath, daily prayer and scripture reading and meeting with a spiritual guide. In the spring of 2011 I will travel oversees for a 1-2 week mission trip.

I will be living on the South Side of Pittsburgh, serving at Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community Church and hope to work part time at REI (Recreation Equipment Inc.). I have tried to be attentive to how God is at work and sensed Him leading me to this place. I’ve recently wrestled with what it means for God to have a plan for my life. I have not come to one conclusion, but after reading Charles Swindoll’s Intimacy with the Almighty I chose to surrender to God and His will. The way I see it, we should learn from the past, embrace the now, and get excited about the future. I am excited for how I will be able to work with God through WCD and Hot Metal.

I am asking that you prayerfully consider supporting me in this wonderful opportunity. Your partnership would help me grow in my commitment to have Christ formed in me and discern God’s call upon my life. I am hoping to form a team of people, some of whom will hold me up in prayer during this experience and some of whom will hold me up financially through this experience. The total cost of tuition, mission trip, and $150 per month living expense is around $5,000. I am asking you to prayerfully consider being a part of my team and supporting me as I pursue Christ, in a focused and intentional way over the next 9 months. Thank you.

We have entered into a covenant relationship with the Board of Global Ministries to support Irene for one year with the possibility of renewing that commitment yearly. Irene is trained as a nurse, midwife, and public health professional. Irene shares about her work in Cambodia, "It is the most fulfilling work I could ever imagine when I work with a pastor to help a family in his village to find care for the child who has stopped attending school because of Thalassaemia (an inherited blood disease which causes anemia), or help a poor family get free treatment from a public hospital, or work together with health staff for the good of the community. Coming to work with church, I am with local pastors and church members, village chiefs and local authorities and volunteers engaging communities to work together."

HIGHER EDUCATION COMMITTEE STACEY ROBERTSON
Congratulations to all our graduates! On Sunday, June 20th we will be recognizing all of our
students who have graduated in the last year. If you know of anyone who has finished high school, college, technical school or an advanced degree please let us know. Over the summer we would love to hear from students. Let us know about that great summer job, or real job for our graduates, interesting internships or travel.

VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION LARRY BUTERBAUGH
Dear VIM Leaders and Friends of Mission,
Did you know that the olive harvest in the Holy Land seems to cycle yearly between a good
abundant year and a year when olives are not abundant? The families that owned the olive groves kept apologizing to our VIM team last year. The trees were not loaded with olives. Regardless, the olives still had to be picked. Maybe VIM teams to the Holy Land have a similar cyclical nature.
Two years ago I cancelled because we couldn’t come up with 10 people – a magical number which allows us to have some discounts with the airlines and to divide the costs of land transportation among enough people to be reasonable. Last year we fielded a wonderful team of 13. We couldn’t hit 10 this year, so I cancelled. I’m already getting people on my list for 2011.
From one of our team members last October comes this message: “What a sad thought that people don't know what they are missing! All the traveling we have done, none come close to the meaning of our trip to the Holy Land! I'm not sure if everyone is so wrapped up in all our problems that they don't want to educate themselves about the Israel/Palestine issue?”
Olive picking in Israel begins about the second week of October. Tentative dates for the 2011 trip:
Oct 9-22. Tentative Cost: $3000. Leader: Tina Whitehead. Continuing education credits are
available for pastors – as is continuing education funding. I will also provide a receipt for
deduction of the costs of this ministry/mission trip for the IRS.
Maybe next year is the year for you, or someone you love, to join the VIM team to the Holy Land.

On Wednesday, April 14th at 7pm we will resume our weekly meetings. We will begin with the
Ray Vander Laan video study “Death and Resurrection.” Ray takes us on location to the Holy
Land so that we can see the places where Jesus walked, taught, suffered, died and rose again.
In each “Faith Lesson” Ray opens up the scriptures, transforming our understanding of God
and challenging us to be a true follower of Jesus. Cost of the study book is $8. Financial help
is available. We will meet in the chapel. Seasoned Bible Studiers and those new to the bible

We have completed our collections for Pathway Shelter for the time being. Thank you for your generous contributions the past three months. Your response has been overwhelming. It's a good feeling to know we have helped so many people in need.

SPRC CONNIE SUTTON
During the month of March the committee will be starting the yearly evaluation process for Pastor Greg and will be finalizing some staff changes. We will be asking Church Council to approve the hiring of a new nursery caregiver and to approve a new staff position of Praise Team Director.
The church is in need of another casual/substitute custodian. A description of this opening can be found in this newsletter.
This is a very active church and the staff spends many unseen hours planning and preparing to help us all serve the Lord and our community. Please take a minute and say thanks to our staff.

STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE
The law teaches us that God's provision dictates the believer's proportion. In other words, what He provides determines what we give. If he gives a little, from that little we are to give; if He gives abundantly, from that abundance we are to give. Whatever He provides, regardless of the depth or breadth, determines the measure of our giving.
Proportionate participation in the work of God involves much more than money. Whatever God has given you, in whatever measure, is to be dedicated to Him. Your talents, your abilities, your material wealth, your time - all are resources from which you can give.

HIGHER EDUCATION COMMITTEE STACEY ROBERTSON
Spring! Yes it is coming and with it final exams and the end of the school year for our students. We have traditionally sent a small package with some goodies and notes to let the students know we are thinking of them. Last year we were blessed with so many things they didn’t fit in the boxes. If we are again blessed to overflowing the extras will go to our Creation trip members.
We have 23 students this year. Some of the items that ship well are: individual service drink mixes such as crystal light and propel, hot chocolate mix, flavored teas, instant cereal, soup and noodles, hard candy, fruit candy, gum or mints, small packages of cookies and crackers. In the past years we have also had small stress balls and play-dough to help with stress. I look forward to seeing what creative ideas come up this year.
We will have boxes in the Growing Spirits room for donations. We will be putting the boxes together after the 11 o’clock service on April 11 and we can always use help with making and delivering the packages. To save on postage we will again try to deliver the local packages in person.

Tired of all the snow and cold temperatures? Then it must be time to think about summer and camping season. So far I have only gotten four applications for summer camps. The more popular sessions do fill up rather quickly, so make your decisions and turn in your registration as soon as possible. By the way, if you check your camping brochure carefully, you should see a couple of familiar faces. Ask Kaitlyn Painter or Bree Bumbarger for autographs.

Jenna Faloon will be joining a group from the Dayton United Methodist Church for a mission trip to the Dominican Republic in March. If anyone would like to help Jenna with expenses, it would be deeply appreciated. Their project while there is to build houses and any money she receives beyond her expenses will be used for materials needed for the houses.

Pathway Shelter - Thanks for all the nice bedding and bath items donated during January. Some will go directly to the shelter for use there and the rest will got to their warehouse for residents who leave the shelter to go to their own apartment and have many needs in order to start over. February will be our last month to collect for the shelter at this time. We are asking for cleaning supplies and paper products. They need garbage bags (13, 30, and 33 gallon), disinfecting wipes, dryer sheets, multi-purpose cleaners, disinfectant spray, dishwasher powder, freezer bags (1 and 2 gallon), plastic cups, paper towels, paper plates, baby wipes, mops and buckets, brooms and dust pans, toilet paper, and paper towels. Thank you for your help and generosity.

Circles - ICCAP is in need of people to supply meal to this group. If anyone is interested in getting a grouptogether to supply a meal, see Carol Buterbaugh for information. They meet at Trinity every Thursday and a meal is provided for them before their meeting. A good ndertaking for a Sunday School class or Disciple group.

HIGHER EDUCATION COMMITTEE STACEY ROBERTSON
While the weather outside doesn’t feel much like spring, we are already thinking about helping our students celebrate the end of their Spring Semester. We have traditionally sent small care packages around the time of final exams to help students cope with the stress of exams. Some schools finish by the end of April so we would like to get the packages out the week of April 11. (That’s the Sunday after Easter.) In March we will be collecting healthy snacks to send and would also appreciate a note from members of the congregation to let our students know we are thinking of them. Any other ideas for small, lightweight treats are welcome.

CAMP STEWARD CINDY LONG
How cold is it? Cold enough to start thinking about warmer weather and the summer church camp programs. Those of you who have attended camps last year should have received information in your homes last week. Both the office and I received our packets as well. All three Western Pennsylvania church camps offer a variety of camps for various lengths of stay. There are camps for the youngest of our church family to the “young at heart”. Mini camps, complete
with parents or grandparents, will welcome our youngest campers while men’s and women’s retreats will enrich the spirits of our adult campers. You can select from a variety of sports camps or a multitude of music, dance, or theater camps. There is sure to be a camp to interest you.

In the past, Trinity has been very involved in the camping program. The church will pay the registration for anyone who wants to attend camp. Camperships are available through the conference. There is even a $10 credit for anyone who has never attended a camping program before. Our church family has also been very generous in donating to the camp fund for our campers as well.

If you would like to help this year, you can do a couple things. First of all, pray that God will touch the hearts of our family so that many will feel the call to attend camp. Secondly, give whatever you can in order to support the cost ofcamping. Just mark your envelope “camperships”. Last, but not least, pray for those who attend camp this summer and send them a card or email to let them know they are in our thoughts and prayers.

TRINITY MISSIONARY REQUEST

Dear Trinity Church,

On March 5 I will once again be going on a one-week mission trip to th the Dominican Republic.
This will be my third year participating. We will be staying at the missionary compound in the town of Hato Mayor and will be under the guidance of a Puerto Rican missionary in Hato Mayor whose name is Pastor Carlos.

I will be going with Scott and Dale Ann Hine, who were members of Trinity Church for a number of years. They organize and head up the mission teams each year. This is their sixth year of ministry to the Dominican Republic. Our group is United Methodists from many different churches and we have been given the nickname “SHINE” (Serving Him In Nations Everywhere).
Each year on our trip our goal is to build as many homes as we can afford to build. Most of the
homes we build are in Haitian refugee villages where the people are very poor and may earn as little as $2 a day working very hard in sugarcane fields. Their tin homes consist of four sides and a roof , held together by sticks or branches, with a dirt floor. Sometimes as many as eight family members (adults and children) live in a single home. The conditions are very bad.

Our group tears down the tin homes. W e purchase wood materials in Hato Mayor for the shell of
the house and stronger tin for the roof, and we build them a new, stronger, safer home. The houses are about the size of a garage. W e build the doors and windows, and install them, and then we finish the home by pouring cement for the floor. The families are so grateful and they praise God for their new home. The fewest number of homes that we have built during our week stay was five homes and we have been blessed some years to be able to build as many as nine homes.

Each home costs around $2000 for all of the material. We hire people in each village to work with us. In addition to the homes we build, we also buy all the food in Hato Mayor to feed the entire village with enough food for two weeks. There are approximately 300 people in the village. It costs about $1500 to purchase this food. We deliver clothing, shoes, school items, and hygiene supplies that were donated.

The most important item that we hand out in the villages, however, is the 500 Spanish bibles that we take with us. Although the food they receive is very important to their daily survival, they treasure the word of God more than they do the food they are given.

In the past two years we have finished or structurally repaired three churches, poured two cement basketball courts for children to have a place to play, built wooden pews for three churches, and some of the volunteers from the group run a daily VBS for all of the children.
In the evenings we visit a different church each night. We are asked to speak at each church. We give our testimonies, we sing, and share the love of Jesus. After each service we give an altar call. Each year many people give their lives to Jesus at these worship services.

Our group also supports a missionary in Hato Mayor. Her name is Erin McFarland Rodriquez.
Erin was from Punxsutawney. Three years ago Erin went with our group and God called her into full-time mission work in the Dominican Republic and is doing wonderful work helping the people.

This year we are intending to do all the things I have mentioned in this letter PLUS see if we can
help out in Haiti. Our United Methodist mission team would first ask that you pray for us and the people of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and secondly, to prayerfully consider any monetary help that could be given to aid in our home building and feeding programs. The need is so great!

Six Things Caregivers Wish They’d Known Sooner
from Reader’s Digest, 12/09 - 1/10

There are so many books and websites offering help to caregivers that you can get overwhelmed by all there is to learn and do. But sometimes what matters most are the insights that come from just doing the job. Here, a few real-life rules of caregiving.

1. It’s okay to push. “I struggled with how much to respect Marjorie’s rather stubborn nature and how much to say, ‘No, we’ve got to make a change,’” says Phil Baer, who helped care for his sister, Marjorie, after her brain cancer diagnosis. “She would take a fall and just wave it off. But one of her doctors took me aside and said, ‘Look, she’s really got to have someone with her at all times.’ And that’s when we brought in some very fine helpers.”

2. Don’t take it personally. Illnesses such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease can cause upsetting
personality changes, says Susan Morris, whose father had a stroke. “I thought he was angry with me,” shesays, “but I came to realize it was partly because of physiological changes. 3. It’s easy to over-share. Online “care pages” at sites like www.caringbridge.org make it simple to update friends and distant family on a loved one’s condition, but you can find yourself getting into details your loved one might prefer to keep private. “Some people sent mass e-mails about personal aspects of Marjorie’s care that didn’t need to go to everyone,” says Ruth Henrich, part of Marjorie Baer’s network of friends. You can set up different e-mail groups on these pages if you want some messages to go only to caregivers.

4. Protect, but not too much. “When Muhammad first started going to a gym for physical therapy [for his Parkinson’s disease], people wanted to be accommodating, so they put him in a separate area where hecould have privacy,” says Lonnie Ali, wife of the boxing legend. “Muhammad got bored out of his mind! We ended up putting him in with the public so he could show off what he could do.”

5. Love goes through changes. If a parent with dementia no longer acts like the person you knew, your feelings are likely to change. This can actually help you cope, says Julie Winokur, whose father, Herbie, had dementia. “I think you let go of your parents in small increments as they slowly disappear,” she says. “Creating some distance is a matter of self-preservation.”

6. Divvy up the work. If you’re a hands-on caregiver, your distant siblings can find lots of ways to chip in—especially if you ask. “My sister helps with our parents’ costs,” Morris says. “And I delegate all the caregiving to her when she visits—she’ll even buy groceries and cook a meal for my family. I’m really able to get a break.”

Out on Ash Wednesday, February 17th. Please bring your family to church to celebrate Ash Wednesday at 7 pm. During the Lenten season Kids Night Out will meet from 7:00pm–8:00 pm.

We have rescheduled the youth (in the 6th to the 12th grade) lock-in for Friday, March 19 th. The cost of the event is $5 and it will be held at the YMCA here in Indiana. We are expecting anywhere from 50 to 100 youth to attend this event. They will be coming from around the Indiana District.

The adult leadership of the district has decided to continue with the normal events that we have every year, so there won’t be munch planning going on. There will be a lot of playing however. We have a lot of fun stuff planned for our youth. We will begin the night in the swimming pool, we will then enter into a time of worship with the Christian band Lantern, and finally there will be free time for the youth. During free time they will be able to play basketball, volleyball, board games, the Wii, or just sleep.

It is going to be a great evening among United Methodist youth from 8 pm to 7 am.

Our main event for February will be our annual Ski Retreat with Grace UMC and Greystone Presbyterian Church. We are leaving on Friday, February 19th at 4:30pm from Greystone. The cost of the weekend is $100 per youth and all youth in the 6th to the 12th grade are invited. Youth should already be signed up but if they are not, they should see PJ right away

During the month of December many items were donated for Pathway Shelter to help residents as they leave the shelter and move into their own apartments. Many items are needed to start over and we have many boxes packed to deliver to the warehouse. Thanks to all who donated these needed items!

During January we will be collecting bedding and bath supplies. Needed items include: towels,
washcloths, shower curtains and hooks, pillows, comforters (all sizes, including toddler), sheets (all sizes, including crib and toddler size), blankets (all sizes), alarm clocks, and night lights.

Happy New Year! For many of our students that means a new semester of learning. We update our address files each semester, so please let us know if your address has changed. We also welcome new students to keep in touch. Our students range from traditional college age to more mature students advancing their education or trying something new. Schools range from four year colleges to technical schools to military training to graduate programs.

We will officially recognize graduates in June, but would like to congratulate Ashley O’Hara who graduated from IUP in December. She has a new job and will be staying in the Indiana area. Any other December graduates please call or email the church office.

SPRC CONNIE SUTTON
We continue the work of the committee, monitoring and supporting our staff with prayers and information to keep the lines of communication open. We STILL have not filled the Nursery Worker position and will be working with Dr. Freddie Bowers to try to fill it with an IUP student with an appropriate major. We ask for your prayers and guidance.

We will be looking at a couple of Position Descriptions this month, revising one and creating a new one. There is currently no description for Praise Team Director. The committee will soon begin the process of Pastor Evaluation. All pastors in the WPA Conference must be evaluated every spring. Two forms were developed in Fall 2008 by the Conference. One is called the
“Long Form” and the other “Short Form”. Pastor Greg was evaluated using the Long Form last spring so we are charged to complete the Short Form this spring.

Public Service Announcement - Medications

Bonnie and I, as do many of you, take some prescription medications. And like you, we all PAY for those drugs one way or another. We have a good health insurance plan for which we pay a $30 co-pay for NAME BRAND medications. That’s not too bad when you realize that my medication alone has a retail price of $1,498 for a one month supply. In 2009 on three NAME BRAND meds I paid $1,080 in co-payments.

I went on the computer and went to the three drug manufacturer’s websites and signed up for the prescription drug assistance programs they have. It did not matter that I had insurance and only had to pay $30. (Each manufacturer has their own rules and not all give assistance.) One of Bonnie’s drugs went from $30 to $25 per month – another went from $30 to $15 per month and mine went from $30 to $5. My co-pay for 2010 will be $540 – a 50% savings. It’s like giving yourself a $540 raise! Who couldn't use that?

There is no way to know what may occur with your name brand drugs, but I just want to encourage you to check out your drug manufacturer’s website and sign up for anything for which you qualify. Our reductions had nothing to do with size of family or income. It was based upon the co-pay amount and nothing else. Do it and hopefully give yourself a raise for the new year!

Once again I would like to thank all of those who were involved with this year’s Christmas musical. An event such as that requires the help and cooperation of many people. Each year I am pleased to see how willingly the members of Trinity step forward to lend a hand wherever it is needed.

A special thank you goes to the Trustees and renovation committee for the new arrangement in the chancel. It was such a thrill to be able to stage this year’s presentation knowing that people would be able to see the performers. A dream has come true for us.

Just a reminder, now that all of those rehearsals are over---we are still singing with two children’s groups on Wednesday nights at Kids Night Out as well as on Sunday mornings during the Sunday school hour. We would love to have you join us for either/both of these times. The younger children sing the old favorites while the older children are learning more complex pieces. Hope to see you there.

For those of you who don’t feel called to attend the parenting class beginning next Sunday---here isa different option. Join us for a new study of the parables. Written by J. Ellsworth Kalas, Parables from the Back Side invites you to study the well-known parables with a twist. Kalas presents new insight into twelve of Jesus’ parables by entering them through the “back-side”—through the eyes of a minor or unsympathetic character. By approaching the stories in this way, Kalas releases newmeaning and clarifies basic teachings. The book contains 12 lessons, so we will do six prior to Pastor Golden’s Lenten study and pick up again after Easter. Each week’s parable is a lesson unto itself so feel free to drop in at any time. Caregivers New Year's Resolutions

In this new year, I will...

Learn to take one hour out of each day just for myself to read, enjoy a hot bath, journal my
thoughts or call a friend.
Attend at least one caregiver support group to realize that I am not alone and that I can learn from others
See my doctor for a physical exam and give my own health needs more priority.
Use respite care at least once a month so that I may get a break and be refreshed. I will consider using the time I have to discover the benefits of massage therapy, the joy of a musical concert, self expression in a painting class or a day at the spa to find stress relief.
Eat a balanced diet and exercise at least 20 minutes three times a week even if all I can do is walk around the house, up and down the stairs or exercise from a chair.
Seek out one new resource to support my caregiver role such as chore services, housekeeping, home care programs or delivered meals.
Try to find a way to laugh or find humor in the day amidst the sadness or discouragement I may feel.Reach out to my family and friends to help with my loved one so that the weight of my responsibility can be lifted and shared. One way I can do this is to keep a list of needs handy so that when help is offered, I can be ready with an answer.
Seek spiritual support or personal counseling to gain perspective of my life, clarity of my role and keep my mental health in check.
Finally, by focusing on these resolutions, I will be able to reap the rewards of caregiving,
maintain balance in my life and provide care longer for my loved one.

Kids Night Out will celebrate the Advent season and learn about the birth of Jesus through
the special songs of the Christmas season. Our final Kids Night Out for the year will be
Wednesday, December 16 . Kids Night Out will resume th on Wednesday, January 6th,
2010.

Kids – don’t forget the Advent party Saturday December 12th. We will begin by
serving lunch at 12:00 pm. Many of you will have been here during the morning
rehearsing for the musical – so I know you will be hungry. Then there will be time for
games, crafts and our favorite story. See you there. Adults – you are always welcome to
help with the party - there’s always lots to do.

We have obtained a list of needs from the director of the shelter. Residents are required to leave the shelter after thirty days. At that time ICCAP finds a low rent apartment for them. The problem is many of these families have no belongings left and are moving into an unfurnished apartment. We can help! Many household items are needed and each month we will be collecting different items.

High priority right now is kitchen utensils. New items are not needed unless you wish to buy them. Extra items you may have in your home are welcome. We all have extra coffee mugs, salt and pepper shakers, etc. Below is a list of their needs. We ask that you stick to the list as their
warehouse only has room for necessities. Used furniture is an on-going need so if you have any of
the items listed let the office know and we will arrange to have it picked up at your home. What a
good way to get rid of furniture when you buy something new!

During the month of December there will be boxes in Bishop Hall for kitchen items. Your
donations will be appreciated.

A Note to All Adult Caregivers for the Holidays

For most families, holidays are filled with opportunities for togetherness, sharing, laughter and
memories. But holidays can also be filled with stress, disappointment and sadness.

Because of the changes he or she has experienced, the person with Alzheimer’s may feel a special
sense of loss during the holidays. At the same time, caregivers may feel overwhelmed maintaining holiday traditions while caring for their loved one. In addition, caregivers may feel hesitant to invite family and friends over to share the holiday for fear they will be uncomfortable with behavior changes in the family member.

Here are some suggestions that may help to make holidays happy, memorable occasions:

Adjust expectations

Call a face-to-face meeting or arrange for a long-distance telephone conference call with family and friends to discuss holiday celebrations. Make sure that everyone understands your caregiving situation and have realistic expectations about you can and cannot do. No one can expect you to maintain every holiday tradition or event.

Give yourself permission to do only what you can reasonably manage. If you’ve always invited 15-20 people to your home, consider inviting five for a simple meal. Consider having a potluck dinner or asking others to host the holiday at their home.

Familiarize others with your situation by writing a letter that makes these points:
“I’m writing this letter to let you know how things are going at our house. While we’re looking forward to your visit, we thought it might be helpful if you understood our current situation before you arrive. “You may notice that ___ has changed since you last saw him/her. Among the changes you may notice are ___. I’ve enclosed a picture so you know how ___ looks now. Because ___ sometimes has problems remembering and thinking clearly, his/her behavior is a little unpredictable. Please understand that ___ may not remember who you are and may confuse you with someone else. Please don’t feel offended by this. He/she appreciates your being with us and so do I. Please treat ___ as you would
any person. A warm smile and a gentle touch on ___’s shoulder or hand will be appreciated more than you know. I would ask that you call before you come to visit or when you’re nearby so we can prepare for your arrival. Caregiving is a tough job, and I’m doing the very best I can. With your help and support, we can create a holiday memory that we’ll treasure.

Involve the person with dementia

Involve the person in safe, manageable holiday preparation activities. Begin slowly by asking the person to help you prepare food, wrap packages, hand you decorations or set the table. (Avoid using candies, artificial fruits/vegetables or other edibles as decorations. Blinking lights may confuse or scare the person.)

Maintain the person’s normal routine so that holiday preparations don’t become disruptive or confusing. Taking on too many tasks can wear on you and the person.

Build on past traditions and memories. Your family member may find comfort in singing old holiday songs, for example. But also experiment with new holiday traditions, such as renting seasonal videos.

Adapt gift giving

Encourage people to buy useful gifts for the person such as an identification bracelet; comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing; audiotapes of favorite music; videos; and photo albums.

Advise people not to give gifts such as dangerous tools or instruments, utensils, challenging board games, complicated electronic equipment or pets.

Depending on his or her abilities, get the person involved in giving gifts. For example, someone who once enjoyed cooking may enjoy baking cookies and packing them in tins or boxes. Or, you may want to buy the gift and allow the person to wrap it.

If friends or family members ask what you want for a gift, suggest a gift certificate or something that will help you out as you care for your loved one, like a cleaning or household chore service.

Try to be flexible

Consider celebrating over a lunch or brunch, rather than an evening meal, to work around the evening confusion or sundowning that sometimes affects some people with Alzheimer’s. Also consider serving nonalcoholic drinks and keeping the room bright.

Prepare for post-holiday letdown. Arrange for in-home care so you can enjoy a movie or lunch with afriend and reduce post-holiday stress.

Holidays are opportunities to share time with the people you love. Try to make these celebrations easy on yourself and the person with Alzheimer’s disease so that you may concentrate on enjoying your time together.

Operation Christmas Child:
130 shoeboxes were delivered to the drop-off site from Trinity. Thanks to all who contributed
boxes of toys. Stacey B. and Tiffany R. put together 53 boxes! This is a yearly project for them. They buy toys throughout the year and are ready to pack their boxes in the fall. What a wonderful contribution to this mission. Kids Night Out put together 11 boxes - thanks kids and the big kids who helped them. We appreciate everyone's involvement in this project. Wasn't it fun?

Youth Covenant Group:
This group of youth meets every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.. It is a time of prayer, conversation, and faith formation. All youth from the 6th to the 12th grades are encouraged to attend. If parents have any questions please give me a call.

Youth Special Activities:
In October we will have a lot of special activities. On Sunday, October 4th we will meet here at Trinity at 1:45 p.m. and head to First UMC in Punxsutawney for the Indiana District Youth Meeting. Currently two of our youth are district youth officers. We will be planning for our retreat in November to Wesley Woods and our January overnighter that will be here at the Indiana YMCA.

On Friday, October 16th we will meet at Mohawk Bowling Lanes for a night of cosmic bowling. More information will be coming as we approach the event but the cost will be $5 per youth and they will need money for snacks. Adult helpers will also be needed for this event. Youth are asked to be signed up by Sunday the 11th. Sign-up sheets are available in the youth room.

On Saturday, October 24th we will meet at Trinity at 6:30 p.m. and head towards Punxsutawney for an evening at the haunted corn maze. The cost for this event is also $5 per youth. Youth are asked to be signed up for this event by Sunday the 18th. Sign-up sheets are available in the youth room.

CROP Walk

The Indiana CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Sunday, October 4th from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. The 10K walk will begin at Grace UM Church and end at Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Organized locally, the Indiana CROP Hunger Walk is looking for 100+ walkers and hopes to raise over $7500 to help stop hunger here in our community and around the world. A portion of the funds raised here in Indiana County will go to the food collection efforts of the Indiana County Community Action Program (ICCAP).

Our local ICCAP Food Bank recieved over $1500 from the 2008 Crop Hunger Walk for use locally in providing food and servies to over 1500 families throughout the county. Operation Christmas Child
Fill a shoe box with Christmas gifts for a child so that they can experience the joy of Christmas.

Since Operation Christmas Child was started by the Samaritan’s Purse organization close to 70 million shoe boxes have been delivered to children in over 120 countries. They are delivered to the poor and needy all over the world. Along with the shoe box each child receives a book of Bible stories, written in their language, and millions of children have come to know Jesus because of the book. For many children this is the first Christmas gifts they have ever received and the first they have heard about Jesus.

We hope many of you will take part in this project over the next few weeks. We need to have your completed box at the church by November 8 through 15 . If you th th need instructions for filing your box, there are copies of directions in the church office.

Also, there are some books about Operation Christmas Child at each entrance to the sanctuary for anyone who would like one. The book tells about different countries that have received shoe boxes and gives examples of how lives have been changed through this project.

VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION UPDATE

Your Conference VIM Team to Israel/Palestine WPA Annual Conference has an Israel/Palestine Task Force that has been advocating study and action with regards to the Israel/Palestine peace process. The following are the members of your conference VIM team to Israel/PalestineOctober 11-24): Carl Ackley (from upstate New York), Linda Bell (Sugar Creek UMC), Jim Bickford (Johnstown Oakland UMC), Marilyn Kay Durst (Ambridge Fellowship UMC), Mary and Dick Hart and Connie Johnson (California UMC), Rick and TC Lyle (Warren First UMC), Diane and John Miller (New Castle First UMC), Alice Moore (Mcknight UMC), and
Gretchen Woeste (Bethel Park Christ UMC). These folks have chosen not to pull back in fear, but to step forward in faith. Not only do they expect to experience a unique pilgrimage, learning more about the geographic and cultural setting of our Bible, but they will volunteer their time and efforts to work alongside Palestinian Christians harvesting olives. Please pray for these volunteers – that they might prepare themselves mentally and spiritually for this trip, that they might be patient, flexible, and safe, and that the team might be in tune to God’s leading as they listen and learn and respond to others.

Project Chacocente
A VIM team from Christ UMC in Bethel Park traveled to Chacocente, Nicaragua, this past July and had a powerful experience. From film footage taken during that trip, Gwen and Clay Kisker of Christ UMC produced a wonderful audio-video package for UMTV. The Kiskers have their own production company and have done an excellent job telling this story! On our Conference web site you can access this video clip from their package. Korean Methodist Hospital in Paraguay
The debt ($35,000) for the Korean Methodist Hospital in Paraguay is now paid in full. There are many worthwhile projects with the Methodist Church of Paraguay. For instance, a benefactor in the U.S. has been paying President Pastor Pablo Mora’s salary. That benefactor lost all investments and went bankrupt in the past year. Expansion/construction of the Methodist Seminary where many VIM participants stay when they volunteer in Paraguay has slowed due to directing all resources toward theKorean Hospital. Contributions should be marked “Paraguay Conference #SS0003200S”.

Home of Hope Outreach – The Nyadire Connection
Through the Home of Hope Outreach program, The Nyadire Connection enables hundreds of
orphans and vulnerable children of the Nyadire region in Zimbabwe to remain in school by
providing fees, a backpack of school supplies, and establishing a personal connection with each
child. Especially vulnerable in the fragile environment of Zimbabwe are hearing impaired
children. At the Nyadire United Methodist Mission primary school, Teachers Mwoyosyi Tapfuma and Desmond Dzemwa have 30 hard of hearing or deaf children in grades 2 – 7. These children from homes in the Mutoko/Murewa/Mudzi region come to Nyadire, live in dorms, eat in the dining room, attend church, and play sports every day. Using sign language, they are taught English, Math, Environmental Science, Social Studies, Religious and Moral education, Home Economics, and AIDS education.

The Nyadire Connection is searching for a church, organization, or individual to sponsor this ongoing program. The yearly fee for each child is $200. Financial support is critical, but equally important is the opportunity to connect and share with these enthusiastic learners who now live in one of the world’s most troubled spots. Members of our youth group are available for hire! If you have a job that needs done around our house (cutting grass, raking leaves, cleaning out a flower bed, painting a porch, etc.) please fill out a form on Pastor Jude's desk in the youth room. Pastor Jude will call you to set up a day and time that the youth can come and do the work. We simply ask that you make a donation to the youth for their youth accounts for the work done. The suggested donation if $10 per hour per youth. Please see Pastor Jude if you have questions about this new youth fundraiser.

The United Methodist Habitat Blitz Build last summer was an excellent example of Western Pennsylvania United Methodists offering their gifts and skills to meet a need. There continues to be great need within WPA and clusters of churches and volunteers reaching out through construction to address those needs. In the next few weeks I'll be talking with district representatives to see how we can more effectively meet some of these needs together.

In the meantime, let me give you another option for volunteering. Retired pastor, Dick Burns, and his wife, Jean, have been struggling with some ongoing medical problems. Dick served churches in Rockland, Van, St. Marys, Johnstown: Oakland, and Corry: First. He then became the Conference approved Evangelist until retiring in 1994. Dick and Jean are getting ready to move in with their daughter Sharon and her husband Dave. This will require an addition to Sharon and Dave's home. Hosanna Ministries will be providing supervision in the blitz construction for this project.

Bekah Swineford from the Bradford First UMC in Kane District – President of her class after one semester at Asbury, Bekah is a summer intern with the General Board of Global Ministries. Serving at the Rising Hope UMC in Alexandria, VA, she will spend 8 weeks in mission outreach to homeless people in the region. This area has a significant Latino population, so Bekah's Spanish will be put to good use. You can track Bekah's ministry this summer through her blog: http://risinghopeintern.blogspot.com. When you read this Bekah, know that we are missing you as an Equalization Member at Annual Conference.

Michael Airgood from Kane First UMC in Kane District – Newly graduated from Taccoa Fall near Atlanta, Georgia, Michael will spend a year as an Individual Volunteer in Mission in Korea, about an hour and a half south of Seoul. Michael serves at the Wesley Mission School teaching the international languages of English and love. When Michael discovered GBGM had put a freeze on hiring new missionaries, he still had to contend with God's call on his life. Ruth Dietz from Ingomar UMC in Pittsburgh District – Founder of the Rainbow Christian Missions, Ruth will lead a VIM team to Kenya in less than two weeks and asks that we pray for this team and this mission to the western province of Kenya. In addition, keep Ruth and her family in your prayers as they have recently suffered a tragedy in their family. Ruth's words: "My family is in the midst of grieving the sudden and tragic loss of my little 23 month old grandson, Gabriel. My daughter's little boy. He very suddenly contracted bacterial meningitis and after a week in pediatric ICU at Children's Hospital, Hershey, he is gone from us. At the very same time, my daughter gave birth to a beautiful little girl. Her little girl was just 2 days old and just released from the hospital when her little boy, Gabriel, fell ill. It has been so very hard. We lost Gabriel on Sunday May 24. I am back home now in Pgh and back at work......and scrambling now to finish up with some detail planning for a mission team I'm taking to Kenya." Volunteers In Missions Update

Spring 2009 New Orleans Mission Trip – NOLA VII This trip is now in the history books as all eighteen volunteers returned from this rich experience by Sunday May 17^th. The team was broken into two groups who worked on separate houses installing laminated hardwood flooring, bathroom tile, and interior doors and trim; installing/finishing drywall; and painting. Both property owners are within weeks of moving "back home".

This was perhaps our most diverse group of volunteers – male & female; ages 14 to 78; international in background with Americans, Koreans, and a Nigerian – representing seven UMC congregations. Ten of the 18 team members were "first-timers". Please take time to talk with these individuals and ask them to share their experiences:

UMC Central Pa Conference VIM Opportunity Upcoming VIM Opportunity in Watsontown, PA. Constructing a new church and 3 weeks of VIM Opportunities this summer.

After 40 years of talking about the need for a new building, Watsontown United Methodist Church (WUMC) is at last taking a step in faith by constructing a new church. This phase of WUMC's Campus for Christ vision has begun and we're looking for volunteers to assist with framing and drywall. Week-long Volunteers in Mission (VIM) opportunities will be available as follows:

· June 22-26 – Framing

· July 13-17 - Insulation, dry wall and finishing dry wall

· July 20-24 - Insulation, dry wall and finishing dry wall

Native American VIM The Native American Fellowship Dayspring Church is building a log cabin church. Did you know that Illinois has more American Indians than North and South Dakota combined? This is a ministry to urban Indians, not those living on a reservation. Dates: June 20 through June 27, 2009. Carol Lakota Eastin is the pastor of this Native American congregation. The church has been erected; the congregation is worshipping in the basement fellowship hall. By June they will be in need of help with plumbing, electrical, drywalling, painting, finish carpentry, landscaping, and pond construction. This new church is located on 43 acres of donated wooded land at the edge of the city of Peoria. Check out the church website: http://www.nafdayspring.com/component/option,com . For those of you interested in Native American Spirituality or the Native American study Schools of Mission offered in 2008 and again in 2009, this is a VIM trip for you. For families, there is an option of enrolling your child (children) in the American Indian Youth camp out – teepee camp – father's day through Wednesday where they would experience Bible study, native crafts, and the Water Park (3^rd grade through high school) … Contact Diane Miller for a Registration Form. Cost of this VIM trip: $350/person. OPENINGS ARE STILL AVAILABLE. THIS COULD BE A GREAT FAMILY EXPERIENCE.

Israel/Palestine VIM A combination pilgrimage and volunteer experience. Since this will be the one and only trip that many participants make to the Holy Land, it will include visits to historical and traditional sites in Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem. Participants will learn about the Bible with experienced tour guides in the locations of the Bible stories. We will visit Qumran, the Jordan River, the Dead Sea and take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee. The volunteer experience will unfold as participants register and we determine the gifts and skills of our team. Right now we're exploring the option of helping with the olive harvest, though this will not be possible if the current drought continues. My experience with VIM teams has always been that the teams embody the gifts and skills to meet the needs where we are. Projected Cost: $3000. Dates: October 11-24.

Haiti VIM There is great need in Haiti for rebuilding due to the four hurricanes that hit the island last season. Team leaders for this VIM trip will be Diane Miller, and Calvin and Gayle Cook. Gayle worked in Haiti as a missionary for a few years. She and Calvin are Connellsville District VIM Coordinators. Dates for this Conference VIM trip are to be determined, but we're aiming for the end of August.

Cooperative School of Christian Mission – the best kept secret in mission education, inspiration, and hands-on mission. This is not just for United Methodist Women or adults. Schools of Mission are for people with a passion for mission. In addition to the adult schools, there are simultaneous schools for children and youth during the week session, and for children during the week-end session. Child care is provided if requested. Besides dozens of short mission presentations to choose from, the following are offered courses: Giving Our Hearts Away, Native American Survival; Sudan; and VIM Leader Training which will include learning to make handicap ramps by modules. The Plenary will focus on Food and Faith, with Rev. Neal Christie from the General Board of Church and Society as the presenter. Additionally, Greg Forrester, VIM Coordinator of the Northeast Jurisdiction UMC, will be instructing a hands-on modular handicapped ramp building/installation training session during the School of Christian Mission.

Dates: July 13-17 and July 17-19. Location: Grove City College. Cost varies according to which event you register for, and whether you commute or bring children.

Spring 2009 New Orleans Mission Trip – NOLA VII

Eighteen participants in Trinity's seventh work trip to New Orleans will be leaving May 9^th & 10^th. This is the second largest Trinity-sponsered contingent to give their time and talents and unconditional love to individuals whose homes were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina floodwaters in August 2005. All team members will return by May 17^th.

The group asks for your prayers for safe travel and safe work, and for the opportunity to give hope to those still struggling almost four years later.

We also thank you for your financial contributions to this special outreach ministry. Those still wanting to contribute make do so by marking your envelope "NOLA".

Conference/Other VIM Experiences:

VIM Leader Training - Have more than a casual interest in Volunteers In Mission? Then you may want to attend one of the VIM training events scheduled for this year. Check your calendar and see how the following dates match up:

May 30 – Conference Center, Cranberry Township – 9:30-3:30 – emphasis on teams incorporating Youth. Trainers: Diane Miller, Renaye Hoffman, Beth Nelson, and others with specialized skills.

July 13-17 - School of Mission, Grove City College. This training will include learning how to construct handicap ramps by modules. Trainer: Greg Forrester.

COST: $10 will cover the cost of lunch, the VIM Handbook, and the CD for the first person who registers from a church. For additional participants from a church, $5 will cover the cost of lunch. For those who take the training at the School of Mission in July, $5 will take care of the Handbook and the CD. If you indicate the July 13-17 training on your registration form, I'll send you information about registering as a commuter or resident for the School of Mission.

United Methodist Action Reach-out Mission by Youth has space available in several camps this summer and we are here to help you every step of the way. We will assist you to promote and sign up participants from your church, train your adults and prepare you to pack and travel to camp. Our program is new to the Northeast but the organization has a 30 year track record of serving people in need while promoting spiritual growth and leadership in youth. Our camps are located in United Methodist churches with passionate well trained camp staff who are attending camp with their own youth groups. In other words, they are just like you.

Projects include painting, yard work, porch and stair repair, construction of handicap access ramps and other small residential projects. Safety is a high priority in all that we do. Camp participants will be motivated each day with devotional time and uplifting evening worship. Fun activities are planned in the evening. Participant fee is $250 and includes all meals, activities and building materials.

Space is still available in the following Northeast Camps:

May 31-June 6 – Dover NH for Young adults one year beyond high school and older

July 12-18 – Toms River, N.J Camp for Grades 7-12

Trinity Staff Changes

We had a busy month – we met with District Superintendent Rev. Sharon Schwab on March 4. She brought Rev. Greg Golden, our new pastor, to meet us. His wife Bonnie also came to the meeting.

He is currently serving the Anne Ashley UM Church in Pittsburgh. We asked and answered questions of each other. Pastor Greg will begin his ministry at Trinity on July 1. Please pray for them as they make this move.

We also hired new custodians this month. Ron Kuzemchak, who has been filling in for us since December, is anxious to begin his spring gardening. A huge THANK YOU from all of us to Ron for his dedicated work for Trinity. He filled in at a very busy, stressful time of remodeling but always approached his work with enthusiasm and a smile. Ron has also agreed to be a substitute for us in the future if needed. Beginning April 1 two custodians will start working with Duane.

Returning will be Tom McLaughlin and joining them will be Bertha Powell. Duane plans to retire on June 30 and Larry Buterbaugh has agreed to be his replacement beginning July 1. Each of the custodians will be working approximately 15 hours a week. Pray for our new staff as we all adjust to these changes.

We are also planning a party for the Porter family. It will be held on Saturday, April 25th at 6 PM. Look for the details in this newsletter (under fellowship post). We hope you will plan to ttend. Please keep the Porters in prayer as they prepare for this change in their lives.

Eastern Orthodox Foundation Work Day
Its early spring and we are headed back to the apple orchard at the Eastern Orthodox Foundation on Saturday April 4th at 10:00am. Our own Master Gardener Sam Armbrester will be enlightening and directing our group on the proper pruning of apple trees to
enhance production. Sam guided a small group of Trinity workers last month and is full of wonderful information which he loves to share.

Things to consider bringing: Chainsaws, hand pruners, pole pruners, bow saws, step or folding ladders, wheelbarrows, and work gloves. Also don’t forget to bring lunch and drinks – this would be a great time to use one of those Sheetz coupons the youth group is selling!

CARE PACKAGES: The Higher Education Committee will again be putting together care packages for our students and service members overseas. As students get ready for final exams we hope to supply them with some nutritious energy food and messages from home. Some suggestions from past years include packets of hot chocolate or drink mixes, hot or cold individual cereal servings, cereal or trail mix bars, dried fruit, gum or hard candy. Notes from the congregation or Sunday School classes are great as well.

We will be packaging the week after Easter and can always use help. This year we are also looking for individuals to deliver local boxes to save on postage. If you live in town it would be a great way to get some exercise. If you have any questions please contact Stacey Robertson or the church office.

VIM Leader Training

Have more than a casual interest in Volunteers In Mission? Then you may want to attend one of
the VIM training events scheduled for this year.

May 30 – Conference Center, Cranberry Township – 9:30-3:30 – emphasis on teams
incorporating Youth. Trainers: Diane Miller, Renaye Hoffman, Beth Nelson, and others with
specialized skills.

July 13-17 - School of Mission, Grove City College. This training will include learning how to
construct handicap ramps by modules. Trainer: Greg Forrester.

COST: $10 will cover the cost of lunch, the VIM Handbook, and the CD for the first person who
registers from a church. For additional participants from a church, $5 will cover the cost of
lunch. For those who take the training at the School of Mission in July, $5 will take care of the
Handbook and the CD. If you indicate the July 13-17 training on your registration form, I’ll send
you information about registering as a commuter or resident for the School of Mission.
Any one of these training events will provide your VIM Leader Certification. If you’ve got

Covenant Discipleship –A Journey of Spiritual Growth for Adults and Youth

A Covenant Discipleship group consists of five to seven people who want to grow in their
relationship with Jesus Christ through mutual accountability and support. They meet once a

At this time we have 9 campers registered to attend one of the conference camps. Stop by the office to pick up a brochure or see me. You will have a wonderful time making new adventures, new friends, and a new relationship with God.

Keep in mind that Trinity has a lot of people who donate towards camperships. If you are
concerned about the cost of a camp, please see Pastor Porter or me.

Stop by the bulletin board in the Growing Spirits classroom to see some of the fun times had at
previous years at camp. I would still like to have some more photos to add to the board so dig

CREATION MUSIC FESTIVAL PLANNING MEETING

On Sunday, April 26th at 7:30 p.m. there will be a Creation Music Festival Planning Meeting. This meeting will be to discuss all the logistics of this year’s festival. Faith organizations help residents of ND, MN, focus on message of hope and
courage as immediate crisis eases.

Hope and courage is the message United Methodist pastors in North Dakota and
Minnesota want to send to their congregations as fighting the Red River's
waters continues.
"They were encouraged, again through hope, to continue to build and to
continue to be vigilant in walking the dikes," said the Rev. Debra
Ball-Kilbourne, of the North Dakota United Methodist Conference. "And if
people were feeling shaky or frightened, or had health issues or young
children, (pastors told them) to evacuate. It was a solid message -- to know
yourself well and do what you need to do for yourself and your family."
Ball-Kilbourne said many in the United Methodist Community met together to
talk about the flooding.
"Not all of them met, and most of the groups who did, met together. The
pastors did a wonderful job of trying to instill hope and courage, and to
provide pastoral care," she said.
Pastoral care an important aspect of disaster response, according to the
Rev. Greg Kroger, Superintendent of the Glacial Lakes District.
"It's important to remind folks to take care of themselves in the midst of a
disaster. To rest, rotate responsibilities and if they wear themselves out
in well-doing early on, they're less effective in the long run," he said.
"It's people caring for each other in the midst of all of this."
The Red River is slowly receding in the Fargo/Moorhead area. National
Weather Service meteorologists believe the river crest early Saturday
morning just over 40 feet. While the crest was a record level, it was three
feet lower than levels forecasted.
For now, Red River basin residents are continuing to monitor sandbag dikes
and levies. One dike gave way to the water, flooding an area around a school
in Fargo. Two of the five school buildings had water damage, according to
officials.
According to Ball-Kilbourne, volunteers worked hard to protect their
community.
"We're coming off of many days now of no sleep. People are coming from all
over to fight the fight against the Red. Just when you think you get the
levies built, (officials) come in and say it's not enough and we have to add
another foot. And you can't just add to the top, you have to go in and add
to the bottom," she said.
But overall, Ball-Kilbourne said there is a sense of calm in the community.
"There's really been no panic. People are feeling quite calm, but there are
moments as we lose a house here or a house there that there's a very natural
fearfulness," she said. "There have only been about six houses that have
been lost. That's an incredibly small number for such an incredible amount
of intense labor in the worst conditions ever."
Jim Anderson, a member of the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance National
Team, agreed that calm is in the air.
"Today, there's a breath and sigh of relief because of the way that the
river has started to come down. It seems to be coming down relatively fast.
We also saw a fair amount of exhaustion because people were trying to save
their homes," Anderson said.
According to Ball-Kilbourne, volunteers have beenworking in the rain and
cold, along with wind and blizzardous conditions, but it was all to save
communities along the river.
"What they're doing is an amazing battle. Most of us have been there to help
and we're so proud of them. The Red is a complicated river and it's an
amazing thing they're doing, but this battle is going on in lots of our
communities, depending on their size and where they are on the river," she
said.
While volunteers have been key to protecting residents in the Red River
basin, Ball-Kilbourne stressed the importance of having volunteers on
standby for when clean-up begins.
"There are a couple of things volunteers can do to help. First is to
organize themselves well before they come. The second is don't come yet.
We're not ready. We're still fighting the fight," she said. "We'll need lots
of mucking out and lots of building. They shouldn't be calling churches or
pastors. Right now, everyone is fine. It's overwhelming folks here who need
to check on people building dikes.
"And they need to pray, and they need to pray hard. In about two weeks,
we're going to be asking for volunteers to come in, but boy, then we'll be
ready, and we'll be the best hosts we can be."
Ball-Kilbourne suggested that teams who want to volunteer should organize
and announce a time to leave after different faith-based disaster
organizations make a call for volunteers.
Anderson went to Moorhead, Minn., after a church closed down from fear of
flooding in the neighborhood. He went to help the church pastor keep in
touch with her parishioners, but the area never flooded, so Anderson has
spent his time in the metro watching the flood situation up close.
"The good news is that the Red River crested quite early Saturday morning
and is now below 39 feet. Our process now is to at least provide support to
the presbytery in general. The thing that we're doing right now is to help
the presbytery help prepare plans of what to do now in the clean-up period,"
Anderson said.
Anderson said volunteers will be called on to help clean-up more than three
million sandbags filled by volunteers to protect the area.
"Volunteers will be helpful in that respect and in helping in the minimal
cleanup of houses. We're not going to know what's needed for another week to
10 days," he said.
With an area that lies along the river, Ball-Kilbourne said Fargo/Moorhead
residents have shown great resilience.
"The Dakotas have been people of great challenge and huge fortitude and
faith. I guess we're finding out (through this disaster) that we still are."

Volunteers In Missions Update

Spring 2009 New Orleans Mission Trip – NOLA VII

If you are interested in joining what will probably be our last mission trip to New Orleans and missed the March 26^th information meeting, that is OK. The registration deadline is not until Wednesday April 15^th – registration packets can be obtained from either Larry Buterbaugh or Dawn Spence. Dates of the trip are Saturday May 9^th through Sunday May 17^th, and the estimated cost is less than $325 per individual. St. Matthew's UMC once again will host our team; we will be sleeping on air mattresses/cots and preparing our own meals, all in air-conditioned quarters. And mid-week we will tour the New Orleans area and the French Quarter during an afternoon and evening.

For some prior participants this has been a life-changing experience and for all it has been an awesome experience. Come join us as George Porter, Jr. leads the group on his last Volunteers In Mission trip as Pastor of Trinity UMC!

Conference VIM Trips

Native American VIM - The Native American Fellowship Dayspring Church is building a log cabin church. Did you know that Illinois has more American Indians than North and South Dakota combined? This is a ministry to urban Indians, not those living on a reservation. Dates: June 19 or 20 through June 27 or 28, 2009 – volunteers will have the option of making this trip with two shorter travel days or one long day of driving to and from East Peoria, Illinois. Carol Lakota Eastin is the pastor of this Native American congregation. The church has been erected; the congregation is worshipping in the basement fellowship hall. By June they will be in need of help with plumbing, electrical, drywalling, painting, finish carpentry, landscaping, and pond construction. This new church is located on 43 acres of donated wooded land at the edge of the city of Peoria. Check out the church website: http://www.nafdayspring.com/component/option,com .

For those of you interested in Native American Spirituality or the Native American study Schools of Mission offered in 2008 and again in 2009, this is a VIM trip for you. Contact Diane Miller for a Registration Form. Cost: $350.

Cooperative School of Christian Mission – the best kept secret in mission education, inspiration, and hands-on mission. This is not just for United Methodist Women or adults. Schools of Mission are for people with a passion for mission. In addition to the adult schools, there are simultaneous schools for children and youth during the week session, and for children during the week-end session. Child care is provided if requested. Besides dozens of short mission presentations to choose from, the following are offered courses: Giving Our Hearts Away, Native American Survival; Sudan; and VIM Leader Training which will include learning to make handicap ramps by modules. The Plenary will focus on Food and Faith, with Rev. Neal Christie from the General Board of Church and Society as the presenter. Dates: July 13-17 and July 17-19. Location: Grove City College. Cost varies according to which event you register for, and whether you commute or bring children. Early bird special – price increases by $10 if registration is postmarked after June 30. Haiti VIM – There is great need in Haiti for rebuilding due to the four hurricanes that hit the island last season. Team leaders for this VIM trip will be Diane Miller, and Calvin and Gayle Cook. Gayle worked in Haiti as a missionary for a few years. She and Calvin are Connellsville District VIM Coordinators. Dates for this Conference VIM trip are to be determined, but we're aiming for the end of August.

Israel/Palestine VIM – a combination pilgrimage and volunteer experience. Since this will be the one and only trip that many participants make to the Holy Land, it will include visits to historical and traditional sites in Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem. Participants will learn about the Bible with experienced tour guides in the locations of the Bible stories. We will visit Qumran, the Jordan River, the Dead Sea and take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee. The volunteer experience will unfold as participants register and we determine the gifts and skills of our team. Right now we're exploring the option of helping with the olive harvest, though this will not be possible if the current drought continues. My experience with VIM teams has always been that the teams embody the gifts and skills to meet the needs where we are. Projected Cost: $3000. Dates: October 11-24.

The Nyadire Connection (TNC) – VIM experiences in Nyadire, Zimbabwe. This outreach ministry is acclaimed by UMCOR as a unique mission model in a very challenging setting (Zimbabwe). I hope that during this Lenten season you are all adding intense prayer to your devotional times. There are certainly plenty of regions in the world that need our prayers for peace. If you haven't adopted one of them, please take on Israel/Palestine. I've attached the weekly E-news letter of Churches for Middle East Peace.

One of the greatest ways of supporting the peace process is to understand what's going on. There is no better way to understanding than being there – taking an opportunity to get to know the people – forming relationships with Palestinians and Israelis who are working for peace in the midst of very trying times. An added blessing – experiencing the geography, the climate, the culture, and the historical and traditional sites named in our Holy Bible. Winds of Change in Washington: Let's Keep Up the Momentum for Peace

Momentum is building in Washington behind robust U.S. efforts to achieve Israeli-Palestinian peace. Since the Gaza cease-fire and the inauguration, there has been a flurry of resolutions, sign-on letters, statements and Congressional trips that demonstrate a growing recognition of the legitimate needs of both Israelis and Palestinians and a commitment to work for a two-state solution.

Following up on a February visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories, including Gaza, Senator John Kerry (D-MA), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, spoke to a Washington, DC think tank this past week in support of a strong U.S. role in resolving the conflict. He said, "we came closest to peace when we had American leadership that encouraged everyone to make hard choices and earned credibility with all sides." Senator Kerry talked about the importance of the Arab Peace Initiative and the encouraging results of Palestinian security reform efforts and stressed that "nothing will do more to make clear our seriousness about turning the page than demonstrating-with actions rather than words-that we are serious about Israel freezing settlement activity in the West Bank."

Other Congressional visitors to Gaza, Reps. Keith Ellison (D-MN), Brian Baird (D-WA) and Rush Holt (D-NJ), gave a powerful briefing on Thursday March 5th, hosted by the New America Foundation and packed with a Capitol Hill crowd, describing their experiences of viewing firsthand the impact of the conflict on Gaza's civilian population. All three Members had also visited Israel - including Sderot - the West Bank, as well as East Jerusalem, touring the Lutheran-run Augusta Victoria Hospital on the Mount of Olives.

Rep. Ellison began the event stressing the need to "open the border crossings" to address both Israeli security needs and the desperate humanitarian conditions in Gaza. He concluded his comments with a strong plea for a "constituency for peace" that would go beyond the partisanship of "Israeli security" supporters and those on the "Palestinian side". Commenting on the rocket attacks and Israel's military response, Rep. Baird emphasized that the current situation is a "threat to U.S. security…and to the people of the region" and that "we need to seriously reevaluate the policies that we have seen played out". Rep. Holt said "you can find wrongs on both sides…and also much to love" and added that, "The United States is not helping enough." Click here to watch the video of this important Hill briefing. Churches for Middle East Peace, together with our Jewish and Arab-American allies and with our 15,000 member grassroots network, has seen real results in its work to encourage and promote constructive Congressional measures and statements in the first months of 2009 and our pro-peace efforts continue to grow.
During the Gaza crisis, CMEP urged Members to speak out in support of an immediate cease-fire and over 40 Representatives and Senators responded with constructive statements. When the House and Senate resolutions on the crisis passed, even these largely one-sided expressions of unwavering support for Israel, included strong demands for U.S. leadership to reinvigorate the peace process.

In the last five weeks we have seen:

62 House Representatives sign a letter to Secretary Clinton supporting Gaza humanitarian aid;
32 Members introduce H. Res. 130 welcoming the appointment of Special Mideast Envoy Senator Mitchell and as of today there are 85 co-sponsors;
Two pro-Israel leaders in the House, Reps. Gary Ackerman (D-NY) and Robert Wexler (D-FL), criticize settlements as a key contributor to diminished hopes for a two-state peace;
Four prominent Members go to Gaza - the first official visits by U.S. officials in three years - and three also visit Palestinian Christian leaders and institutions in East Jerusalem; and
32 Senators sign a letter to Secretary Clinton expressing support for "tenacious" U.S. efforts to achieve peace.

This Congressional peace momentum is building as the Obama White House demonstrates that Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking is a high priority on their foreign policy agenda. Secretary of State Clinton and Special Envoy Mitchell traveled to Cairo, Israel and the West Bank this past week. At a conference on Gaza reconstruction, Clinton pledged $900 million in U.S. aid for the Palestinians and stressed the need to "foster conditions in which a Palestinian state can be fully realized, saying "Time is of the essence. We cannot afford more setbacks and delays."
The biggest news story of the trip came from Secretary Clinton's answer to a question in Ramallah. When asked about Israeli plans to demolish 88 Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem, she called the activity "unhelpful and not in keeping with the obligations entered into under the roadmap", and said the issue "will be taken up with the Israeli government". News stories in The Washington Post on March 5 and 6 highlighted the exchange and its impact: "Clinton Criticizes Israel's Eviction, Demolition Plans" and "Israeli Spurns Criticism from Clinton."

However, as positive as these developments in Congress and with the Administration are, our pro-peace work cannot let up.
In addition to Secretary Clinton's comments on East Jerusalem home demolitions, Haaretz reports that "Israel has received four official complaints from members of the new administration regarding various issues linked to West Bank settlements", however as of yet the Obama Administration has declined from making clear public statements on the need for a settlement freeze.
In a letter to Secretary Clinton on March 2nd, CMEP urged her to "make clear during [her] current Mideast trip that the Obama Administration will not tolerate ongoing Israeli settlement activity" lest the credibility of U.S. peace efforts be called into question, Palestinian Authority security efforts undermined and extremists elements strengthened. So far Clinton and others have hesitated to even utter the word "settlements" publicly, but if that is indeed going to change in the coming weeks and months, there must be public support for the U.S. to hold both Israel and the Palestinians accountable.

In Congress, even with recent positive actions, some Members seem bent on the patterns of anti-Palestinian and anti-peace actions that must soon become a thing of the past if progress is going to be made. Since the Administration has announced its intent to send $900 million in funding to the Palestinians, some Representatives and Senators have introduced measures or made statements urging heavy restrictions on funding for the Palestinians or for UN agencies working in Gaza.
Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said last week that, "The Administration should withdraw its pledge to provide $900 million in bonus funding to the Palestinian Authority and Gaza reconstruction." Rep. Shelly Berkley (D-NV) is leading a campaign to condition the aid on an end to rocket fire and the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. In the Senate, similar initiatives by Sen. John Kyl (R-AZ) have been met with bi-partisan opposition, but advocates of U.S. funding for the Palestinians as a vital part of the peace efforts will need to remain vigilant when the supplemental bill comes up later in the spring.

Let's keep up the momentum for peace… Change cannot come without your active and sustained advocacy.

The work of CMEP advocates is making a difference and there is fertile ground for a new approach to Israeli-Palestinian relations, but we need to keep working if we are going to create the "constituency for peace" that Rep. Ellison called for! Here are a few actions you can take to help keep up the movement towards a just and lasting peace:

· Mark your calendars and plan to attend CMEP's annual advocacy conference from June 7-9 in Washington, DC.

· When Congress goes home for the Easter and Passover recess from April 6-17, meet with your Senators and Representative and stress the need for bi-partisan support for U.S. engagement to move both sides toward a just peace. Finally, as Rev. David Johnson wrote in CMEP's recent Lenten Reflection, "Pray for peace, yes! Do those things that contribute to justice, diligently and faithfully. Watch for indicators of equality and dignity breaking out between the two suffering peoples in Israel and Palestine. Measure those signs in a continuing role as peace-makers and reconcilers, celebrating every indication of growth. Encourage those who work for peace, those in the land and those outside."

In 1992, Hurricane Andrew hit the coast of south Louisiana causing major damage to the area around Baldwin. UMCOR came to the area with volunteers and supplies and used the old Sager Brown campus to stage their operations. After two years, UMCO determined that the Sager Brown campus would be an excellent location to build an UMCOR depot from which disaster relief could be collected and provided to the world. The depot opened in 1996. Each year more than 3,000 volunteers come to Sager Brown to work in the UMCOR Depot, or in service to the community of Baldwin, LA, to help make a difference for people who are suffering. In 2008 Sager Brown shipped over $4.7 million of Relief Supplies, internationally and within the U.S., including over 20,000 flood buckets.
